in defense of a point and shoot

Jefferson County High School Firstcoming 2009, photographed with the Canon G10, copyright Erik M. Lunsford
A good friend of mine once told the story about a newspaper staff photojournalist who uses (or used, considering the age of the story) a pair of point and shoot cameras on assignment for that photographer’s paper. Startling, I remember, since [...]

kiilsgaard on kentucky

21 year-old WKU Junior Carl Kiilsgaard is working on a rather intensive project documenting the life of an impoverished family in rural Kentucky. Having met Carl when he interned at the Palm Beach Post, I have had the humbling opportunity to watch him grow as a photographer. Carl sent several folders of images for consideration, [...]

in spring, all things awaken

Awakenings, a small part of a larger project that I’m working on, published Tuesday in the Post-Dispatch after about a month of working on various “awakenings” related to spring. The idea behind the project is simple: In life, there are awakenings of many kinds, ranging from physical awakenings (human, animal, plants, [...]

in town, in mind

This photograph was made in the waning minutes of light as our aircraft headed south back to Florida. The picture itself is out of focus (I think) unless it’s subtle motion blur disguising itself…which in that case I *meant* to do that…or not.
Either way, I enjoy this image for the enveloping darkness creeping across the [...]

Thingamajigs and whatchamacallits

The last night here in St. Louis we took a drive to the local custard stand, and on the way we passed through Lemay, a slang term for one of the local neighborhoods at the edge of the city and county. Every corner offered up something new, like this fantastic sign from a local shop.

Across [...]

A view from the arch

Melissa Lyttle gave me a little advice several nights after moving to Florida 3 years ago. She said, in paraphrase, that the best part of moving to new surroundings is having the opportunity to see and photograph the landscape with “fresh eyes” and a new perspective. I took that advice to heart and try to [...]

Plastic Cones for Dogs

Took Lexi for a walk today. She has a plastic cone around her neck due to eye surgery a couple days ago. On the walk around the trail near the Hansford house in Jackson, Miss, a couple of older ladies giggled at the awkward site of the dog trying to unsuccessfully scratch her head.

Rurality

I’m on my way to Mississippi, taking the easy route in the back seat of the Honda Accord while Karla takes the wheel. I love wireless internet and digital cameras that make all this happen.
This is about as simple of a farmhouse I could find along the highway (I’m shooting from a speeding [...]

red punch (in black and white)

I had a tough time deciding whether to show this image in color or black n’ white. It’s a photograph of red sugar-laden punch spilled on a vinyl plastic tablecloth during a backyard bbq earlier tonight at the house. It has great color — the deep red of the punch and the soft whites [...]

After the graduation

Kathleen graduated from high school tonight at a large arena in St. Charles county. It was pretty long, considering her school graduated nearly 500 students with 10 valedictorians. Come to think of it, tonight felt more like a college graduation, except this had the norm of a social rite passage that all high school students [...]
